The Brand That Started With a Bikini on a Malibu Beach

Some brands are built in offices. Frankies Bikinis was built in the California sun.

In 2012, Francesca Aiello was seventeen years old, growing up in Malibu, and practically living in the ocean — junior lifeguarding in the mornings, surfing in the afternoons, water polo at night. Swimwear wasn’t a fashion statement for Francesca. It was a daily uniform. And she was very particular about that uniform. When she spotted a woman on the beach wearing a skimpy bikini bottom she’d never seen anywhere before, she went looking for it in stores. It didn’t exist. So she made it herself.

Her mother Mimi encouraged her to have the first pieces custom made. Friends started requesting them. Friends of friends started requesting them. Francesca began posting her designs on Instagram at a time when almost no one else was using social media to build a fashion brand, and the response was immediate and real. By 2014, Frankies Bikinis had grown fast enough to earn Francesca a spot at Miami Swim Week — making her the youngest designer ever to show on that stage.

She has since been named a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree, won Fashion Collaboration of the Year at the Daily Front Row Awards, received an $18 million minority investment from Victoria’s Secret in 2022, and built one of the most recognizable swimwear brands in the United States. Through every stage of that growth, the founding principle has never changed: make women feel confident in whatever they’re wearing.
